Overview
Sodium alginate is the sodium salt of alginic acid—a hydrophilic polysaccharide extracted from brown seaweed. It is widely used as a stabilizer, thickener, and emulsifier in food products and as an excipient in pharmaceuticals[2][3]. In medicine—particularly for gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and heartburn—sodium alginate acts by forming a viscous gel or "raft" upon contact with gastric acid. This raft floats on top of stomach contents to create a physical barrier that prevents reflux of gastric acids into the esophagus[1][4][5]. Sodium alginate is also found in antacid formulations such as Gaviscon. Its mechanism does not involve systemic absorption but rather mechanical protection via gel formation.
