This combination therapy, consisting of sodium benzoate and omega-3 fatty acids, is being investigated by the China Medical University Hospital for the treatment of schizophrenia, particularly treatment-resistant cases. Sodium benzoate acts as a D-amino acid oxidase (DAAO) inhibitor, which prevents the breakdown of D-serine, a potent co-agonist of the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor. By increasing D-serine levels, sodium benzoate enhances NMDA receptor-mediated neurotransmission, addressing the NMDA receptor hypofunction hypothesized to underlie schizophrenia symptoms. Omega-3 fatty acids (such as EPA and DHA) are included for their anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective properties, aiming to reduce the neuroinflammation associated with the disorder. This dual-action approach is specifically being evaluated to improve clinical outcomes beyond standard antipsychotic therapy.
