Aknichthol is a topical anti-acne medication developed by Ichthyol-Gesellschaft Cordes Hermanni & Co, specifically formulated for the treatment of various forms of acne, including acne vulgaris. It is a combination product containing light sodium bituminosulfonate (Ichthyol-Sodium, light) and salicylic acid. Sodium bituminosulfonate is a sulfonated shale oil derivative that exhibits anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and anti-seborrheic properties, which help to reduce the redness, bacterial load (particularly *Cutibacterium acnes*), and oiliness associated with acne lesions. Salicylic acid acts as a keratolytic agent, softening and promoting the exfoliation of the stratum corneum, which helps to unclog pores and prevent the formation of new comedones. The formulation is typically presented as a lotion that may also contain zinc oxide or titanium dioxide to provide a drying effect and cosmetic coverage of inflamed skin areas.
