Overview

Sodium bromide is an inorganic compound with the formula NaBr. It functions by enhancing the inhibitory neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) within the brain, inducing a calming effect on neuronal activity. It was widely used as an anticonvulsant and sedative in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Though its use in human medicine has declined with newer medications, it continues to be used in veterinary medicine, particularly for treating seizure disorders in dogs.
