Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Sodium calcium edetate (also known as edetate calcium disodium) is a synthetic polyaminocarboxylic acid and heavy metal chelating agent. It is primarily indicated for the reduction of blood lead levels and depot stores of lead in patients with acute or chronic lead poisoning and lead encephalopathy. The drug works by forming stable, water-soluble coordination complexes with divalent and trivalent heavy metal ions, such as lead, which displace the calcium ion in the edetate molecule due to their higher binding affinity. The resulting chelated complex is then rapidly excreted by the kidneys via glomerular filtration, thereby facilitating the elimination of toxic metals from the body. Sodium calcium edetate is administered intravenously or intramuscularly and is also investigated for other heavy metal overloads, such as inherited hypermanganesemia.
