Overview

Sodium carboxymethylcellulose is a semi-synthetic, water-soluble polymer derived from cellulose. It is widely used as an ophthalmic lubricant (artificial tears) for the symptomatic relief of dry eyes and ocular irritation due to wind or sun exposure. In pharmaceutical manufacturing, it serves as an excipient—acting as a binder and disintegrant in tablets, a thickener and stabilizer in liquid formulations, and a film-former in topical preparations. Its mechanism of action in ophthalmology involves binding to corneal epithelial cells via glucopyranose subunits interacting with glucose transporters (GLUT1), promoting corneal wound healing by facilitating cell attachment and migration. Sodium carboxymethylcellulose is generally regarded as safe (GRAS) for use in food products as a thickener or stabilizer[1][2][4][5][6][7].
