Sodium cellulose phosphate is an ion-exchange resin used primarily to prevent the formation of calcium-containing kidney stones in patients who absorb too much calcium from their food. It is also used to treat hypercalcemia and hypercalciuria. The drug works by binding with calcium and other divalent cations in the gastrointestinal tract, thereby reducing their absorption into the bloodstream and ultimately decreasing urinary excretion of calcium. This mechanism helps lower high levels of urinary calcium, which can contribute to kidney stone formation. Sodium cellulose phosphate is not absorbed systemically; its action is localized within the gut. The most well-known brand was Calcibind, developed by Mission Pharma, but it has been removed from the market for unspecified reasons[1][2][3][5].
