Isotone saline water, commonly known as isotonic or normal saline, is a sterile solution of 0.9% sodium chloride in water, designed to match the physiological osmolarity of human blood. In the context of clinical research, such as the Phase 3 BACT trial (NCT04857671) sponsored by Helse Nord-Trøndelag HF, it is utilized as an inert placebo comparator. The trial evaluates the efficacy of Botulinum Toxin A (Botox) for the treatment of frequent and chronic tension-type headache (TTH) using the FollowTheSutures injection protocol. As a placebo, it is administered via injection to maintain participant blinding and provide a baseline for assessing the therapeutic effect of the active treatment. It possesses no specific pharmacological target or active biological mechanism for the treatment of headache disorders.
