Drug intelligence / Profile preview
0.9% Physiological Saline, USP (commonly referred to as normal saline or isotonic sodium chloride solution) is a sterile, nonpyrogenic solution containing 0.9% sodium chloride in water. It is widely utilized in clinical medicine for intravenous fluid replacement, wound irrigation, and as a diluent or vehicle for the administration of compatible drug additives. In the context of clinical trials, such as the Phase 1 cumulative skin irritation study sponsored by Pulmatrix Inc. (NCT02198963), it frequently serves as an inert negative control or placebo comparator to establish a baseline for minimal or no skin irritation. Because it is a standard physiological salt solution, it has no specific biological macromolecular target and acts primarily through physical and osmotic mechanisms to maintain fluid and electrolyte balance.
