Drug intelligence / Profile preview
sodium chloride + magnesium chloride + sodium acetate + potassium chloride + sodium gluconate is a sterile, nonpyrogenic balanced multi-electrolyte intravenous crystalloid solution marketed as Plasma-Lyte A and, in related branding, Isolyte S. It is a **small molecule combination electrolyte formulation** rather than a biologic. The solution provides physiologic concentrations of sodium, potassium, magnesium, chloride, acetate, and gluconate to expand and maintain extracellular fluid volume, correct dehydration and electrolyte depletion, and provide an alkalinizing effect because acetate is metabolized to bicarbonate. It is used as a source of water and electrolytes for hydration and correction of electrolyte imbalance, and is also described in labeling context as an alkalinizing agent; closely related electrolyte solution presentations are also used for general irrigation, washing, and rinsing. Publicly marketed developers and manufacturers include Baxter and B. Braun.
