Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Sodium chloride + potassium chloride + magnesium chloride + sodium gluconate + sodium acetate is a **balanced crystalloid electrolyte solution** used primarily as an intravenous source of water and electrolytes for hydration, extracellular fluid replacement, and alkalinization. It is marketed under brand names including **Normosol-R**, **PLASMA-LYTE A**, and **Isolyte S**. The solution contains sodium, potassium, magnesium, chloride, acetate, and gluconate in concentrations designed to approximate the principal ionic composition of plasma, thereby supporting restoration of intravascular and extracellular fluid volume while minimizing disruption of normal electrolyte relationships. Its pharmacologic effect is not mediated through a single discrete molecular target; rather, it acts systemically by replacing water and essential electrolytes, while acetate is metabolized to bicarbonate and contributes an alkalinizing effect. It is a pharmaceutical small-molecule combination product rather than a biologic, and is used in adults and pediatric patients for hydration, electrolyte replacement, and correction or prevention of mild metabolic acidosis associated with fluid loss.
