Drug intelligence / Profile preview
A sterile, isotonic **balanced crystalloid electrolyte solution** containing sodium chloride, sodium acetate, sodium gluconate, magnesium chloride, and potassium chloride. Intravenous presentations, including Plasma-Lyte A and Plasma-Lyte 148, provide water and physiologic concentrations of sodium, potassium, magnesium, chloride, acetate, and gluconate for extracellular-fluid replacement, hydration, and electrolyte replenishment. Acetate and gluconate are metabolized with hydrogen-ion consumption, producing an alkalinizing effect. Labeled uses include replacement of acute extracellular-fluid losses associated with surgery, trauma, burns, or shock, and adjunctive restoration of circulating volume with moderate blood loss. Equivalent ingredient-set products are also marketed as irrigation solutions, including Physiolyte and PhysioSol, which are not intended for usual parenteral administration.
