Overview

**TPN Electrolytes** is a sterile, phosphate-free, hypertonic intravenous multiple-electrolyte concentrate containing sodium chloride, sodium acetate anhydrous, magnesium chloride, potassium chloride, and calcium chloride. Developed and marketed by Pfizer through Hospira, it is diluted into total parenteral nutrition solutions to maintain electrolyte homeostasis and prevent or correct deficiencies of sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, chloride, and acetate in adults receiving central venous TPN. Its therapeutic activity is electrolyte replacement rather than selective binding to a discrete molecular target; acetate provides a metabolizable anion that can contribute to systemic bicarbonate generation.
