Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Sodium chloride 20% (NaCl 20%) is a hypertonic saline solution investigated as a continuous hyperosmolar therapy to control intracranial hypertension (ICH) and reduce intracranial pressure (ICP) in patients with moderate-to-severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). Developed as an investigator-initiated treatment by Nantes University Hospital, it is administered as a continuous intravenous infusion titrated to maintain blood sodium levels between 150 and 155 mmol/L. By inducing hypernatremia, the solution establishes an osmotic gradient that draws water out of brain tissue, thereby reducing cerebral edema. It was evaluated in the Phase 3 COBI trial (NCT03143751) to assess its efficacy in improving long-term neurological recovery at 6 months compared to standard care.
