Drug intelligence / Profile preview
NaCl 3% HS (Hypertonic Saline 3%) is a sterile, nonpyrogenic, hypertonic crystalloid intravenous solution composed of 3% sodium chloride (NaCl) dissolved in water. It has an osmolarity of approximately 1,027 mOsmol/L, which is significantly higher than that of normal blood plasma. By raising serum sodium levels and plasma osmolality, it draws water out of cells and into the extracellular space. In clinical trials, such as those led by Ahmed Mohamed ELbadawy, prophylactic administration of NaCl 3% HS has been investigated to prevent transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) syndrome, a life-threatening condition characterized by dilutional hyponatremia and fluid overload caused by the absorption of hypotonic irrigating fluids during TURP surgery. It is also widely used in clinical settings for the acute treatment of severe symptomatic hyponatremia and to reduce intracranial pressure in patients with traumatic brain injury or cerebral edema.
