Sodium chromate Cr-51 is a diagnostic radiopharmaceutical that provides radioactive chromium isotope 51 in the form of sodium chromate. It is primarily used for intravenous administration to determine red blood cell volume or mass, study red blood cell survival time in conditions such as hemolytic anemia, and evaluate blood loss. The mechanism involves the dissociation of the compound to release the dianionic chromate ion, which binds initially to the red blood cell membrane and then more slowly and nearly irreversibly to intracellular hemoglobin. Chromium 51 decays by electron capture and gamma emission with a physical half-life of about 27.7 days, making it suitable for diagnostic imaging studies[1][2][4]. The agent remains bound until erythrocyte senescence or elution occurs; liberated chromium is excreted mainly via urine[2][4]. It does not have therapeutic uses but serves as an essential tool in hematology diagnostics.
