Overview

Sodium citrate + potassium citrate is an oral alkalizing agent combination primarily used to manage metabolic acidosis in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and to treat or prevent urolithiasis (kidney stones). Developed and marketed by Nippon Chemiphar under the brand name Uralyt-U in Japan, the drug consists of citrate salts that are metabolized in the liver to produce bicarbonate. This process increases systemic bicarbonate levels, thereby neutralizing the acid load that failing kidneys cannot adequately excrete. Additionally, the increase in urine pH helps dissolve uric acid stones and prevents the formation of cystine and uric acid stones. Clinical studies in Japan have also explored its potential to improve renal function markers such as serum creatinine and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) in CKD patients.
