Overview

Sodium copper chlorophyllin is a water-soluble, semi-synthetic derivative of natural plant chlorophyll in which the central magnesium atom is replaced by copper. It is used primarily as a dietary supplement and food colorant, but also has applications in medicine for its deodorizing, antioxidant, antimutagenic, and potential anti-inflammatory properties. Its main mechanism involves neutralizing odor-causing compounds such as trimethylamine (TMA), making it useful for managing body odor in patients with colostomy or ileostomy and those with fecal or urinary incontinence. Sodium copper chlorophyllin also acts as an antioxidant by scavenging free radicals and may protect against genetic damage from oxidative stress or radiation exposure. It has been investigated for use as a chemopreventive agent due to its antimutagenic effects[1][2][4][5][6].
