Sodium cromoglycate is a synthetic small molecule medication classified as a mast cell stabilizer. It is primarily used for the prophylactic treatment of asthma and allergic conditions such as allergic rhinitis and conjunctivitis. Additionally, it is administered orally to manage systemic mastocytosis and ulcerative colitis. The drug works by inhibiting the degranulation of sensitized mast cells, thereby preventing the release of histamine and other mediators involved in type I allergic reactions. Its mechanism may also involve inhibition of calcium influx into mast cells and possible modulation via G protein-coupled receptor 35 (GPR35). Sodium cromoglycate does not relieve acute asthma attacks but reduces their frequency and severity when used regularly[1][2][8].
