Sodium deoxycholate is the sodium salt of deoxycholic acid, a secondary bile acid produced in the body as a metabolic byproduct of intestinal bacteria. It works by disrupting cell membranes, particularly in adipocytes (fat cells), causing them to break down and release their contents. This cytolytic (cell-destroying) action is the basis for its use in fat reduction treatments[1][3][7]. In the body, deoxycholic acid naturally functions to emulsify and solubilize dietary fats in the intestine. When used medically as an injectable solution, it targets and destroys fat cells in the treated area, allowing the body to metabolize and remove the released fats over time[3][6]. The FDA approved deoxycholic acid injections (branded as Kybella) in April 2015 specifically for improving the appearance of moderate to severe submental fat, commonly known as "double chin"[2][3][4]. This represented the first pharmacological agent available for submental fat reduction, offering a less invasive alternative to surgical procedures[2][3].
