Sodium dimercaptosulphonate (DMPS) is a thiol-containing chelating agent used primarily for the treatment of heavy metal poisoning and Wilson's disease. It contains two sulfhydryl groups that form stable, water-soluble complexes with copper and other heavy metals (such as mercury, lead, and arsenic), facilitating their excretion via the kidneys. In the management of Wilson's disease, DMPS is utilized to reduce the toxic accumulation of copper in the liver and central nervous system. The Second Affiliated Hospital, School of Medicine, Zhejiang University is specifically researching the optimization of DMPS therapy through individualized regimens based on the genotype-phenotype characteristics of Chinese patients to improve long-term prognosis and minimize adverse effects.
