Overview

Tetrasodium ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (tetrasodium EDTA), also known as sodium edetate, is a synthetic chelating agent with potent anticoagulant, antimicrobial, and antibiofilm properties. It acts by chelating divalent and trivalent metal ions, such as calcium and magnesium, which are essential cofactors for both the blood coagulation cascade and the structural integrity of bacterial cell walls and biofilms. Clinically, a 4% solution of tetrasodium EDTA (marketed as KiteLock) is approved in Canada, Europe, and Australia as a non-antibiotic catheter lock solution to maintain the patency of central venous access devices (CVADs) and prevent catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSIs) and occlusions. It is particularly utilized in pediatric patients with intestinal failure receiving long-term parenteral nutrition and in hemodialysis patients. In the United States, it has received FDA Breakthrough Device designation and is undergoing clinical evaluation.
