Overview

Sodium feredetate is an iron-containing drug used primarily for the treatment and prevention of iron deficiency anemia. It is a water-soluble complex formed by chelating ferric ions with EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid), which enhances its stability and bioavailability. Sodium feredetate increases red blood cell production by supplying bioavailable elemental iron necessary for hemoglobin synthesis. It is commonly used in clinical practice as an oral or parenteral source of supplemental iron, especially in populations at risk for or suffering from anemia due to chronic blood loss, malnutrition, pregnancy, or other causes[6][8]. Sodium feredetate is distinct from simple inorganic salts like ferrous sulfate because it uses a chelated form that may reduce gastrointestinal side effects and improve absorption. It should not be confused with "sodium ferulate," which is unrelated chemically and pharmacologically[6][8].
