Sodium ferric gluconate is an intravenous iron replacement product used to treat iron deficiency anemia in adults and children aged 6 years and older with chronic kidney disease who are receiving hemodialysis and supplemental epoetin therapy. It is a stable macromolecular complex of iron(III) oxide hydrate bonded to sucrose with a chelating gluconate function. The drug works by replenishing body iron stores, enabling the synthesis of hemoglobin for oxygen transport and supporting red blood cell production. After administration, the complex is endocytosed by macrophages in the reticuloendothelial system; within acidic lysosomes, it releases iron that is then incorporated into ferritin, transferrin, or hemoglobin[1][2][3][5][8].
