Overview
Sodium ferrous citrate is an orally active iron supplement used primarily for the treatment of iron deficiency anemia. It is a complex of iron(II) with sodium and citrate, designed to provide a source of divalent iron for hemoglobin synthesis while maintaining better gastrointestinal tolerability compared to traditional iron salts. Beyond its use in anemia, sodium ferrous citrate has been studied for its effects on mineral and bone disorder markers in patients with non-dialysis-dependent chronic kidney disease (CKD), where it has shown potential in reducing parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels. Furthermore, it is frequently investigated in combination with 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA) to enhance mitochondrial function and immune responses, with clinical trials exploring its efficacy as a vaccine adjuvant for SARS-CoV-2 and as an adjunct treatment for uncomplicated malaria.
