Overview

Sodium fluoride is an inorganic compound used primarily for the prevention and control of dental caries (tooth decay) and for the maintenance of dental health. It is available in oral and topical forms including tablets, lozenges, solutions/drops, gels/pastes/dentifrices. Sodium fluoride acts by increasing tooth resistance to acid dissolution through remineralization of enamel and by inhibiting cariogenic bacterial processes. Its mechanism involves interfering with bacterial metabolism (notably Streptococcus mutans and lactobacilli), inhibiting glycolytic enzymes involved in lactic acid production that leads to tooth decay. Fluoride ions also alter cell membrane permeability in bacteria and lower cytoplasmic pH. Systemically (before tooth eruption), it incorporates into developing teeth; topically (post-eruption), it strengthens existing enamel[1][5][8]. Excessive exposure during development can cause fluorosis.
