Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Sodium fluoride is a dental agent used to prevent dental caries (cavities) and maintain dental health. It works through multiple mechanisms: increasing tooth resistance to acid dissolution, promoting remineralization, and inhibiting cariogenic microbial processes. When applied topically, sodium fluoride kills bacteria that cause caries, such as Streptococcus mutans and lactobacilli, by interfering with their metabolic activities. It inhibits glycolytic and other enzymes involved in bacterial metabolism, changes cell membrane permeability, and lowers cytoplasmic pH, decreasing acidity that contributes to tooth decay. Neutral sodium fluoride specifically refers to the pH-neutral formulation of sodium fluoride, which is commonly used in dental rinses and gels.
