Overview

**Sodium fluoride + carbopol** is a combination of **sodium fluoride**, an inorganic fluoride salt used primarily for caries prevention, and **carbopol**, a synthetic high-molecular-weight crosslinked polymer of acrylic acid used as a gel-forming and bioadhesive excipient in pharmaceutical formulations. Sodium fluoride promotes tooth enamel remineralization and inhibits demineralization by forming fluorapatite, which is more acid-resistant than hydroxyapatite, and may also exert antibacterial effects by interfering with bacterial metabolism and acid production. Carbopol acts mainly as a bioadhesive and viscosity modifier; in oral or topical formulations it can enhance the retention of sodium fluoride on tooth/enamel or mucosal surfaces, optimizing the pharmacodynamic effect and improving the protective and remineralizing potential of the fluoride by increasing its contact time with tissues. This combination is most commonly used in dental products such as mouth rinses, gels, or toothpaste designed for anti-caries and anti-erosive effects[1][2][4].
