Overview
Fluoride varnish + tricalcium phosphate (brand name: Clinpro White Varnish) is a topical dental remineralizing agent developed by 3M. It combines 5% sodium fluoride (NaF) with a functionalized tricalcium phosphate (fTCP) component. The formulation is designed to provide a sustained release of fluoride, calcium, and phosphate ions directly to the tooth surface. Its primary mechanism of action involves the promotion of enamel remineralization by facilitating the formation of fluorapatite and inhibiting the demineralization of the hydroxyapatite mineral structure. It is indicated for the prevention and treatment of dental caries, enamel white spot lesions (WSLs), and tooth demineralization, particularly in high-risk populations such as patients undergoing fixed orthodontic treatment. The University of Hong Kong has conducted Phase 2 clinical trials evaluating its efficacy in preventing white spot lesions during orthodontic therapy.
