Overview

Sodium fluoride + zinc is a combination of two inorganic compounds commonly used in oral health products. Sodium fluoride acts primarily to strengthen tooth enamel and prevent dental caries by promoting remineralization and inhibiting the demineralization process[1][2]. Zinc, often included as a salt such as zinc chloride or simply as ionic zinc, has antimicrobial properties that help reduce plaque formation and gingival inflammation. The combination may enhance the bactericidal effects against oral pathogens; studies show that while sodium fluoride alone is mainly effective at low pH, its combination with zinc increases bactericidal activity across a broader pH range[3]. This synergy makes the combination useful in mouthwashes or dentifrices for preventing dental caries, managing gingivitis, reducing plaque accumulation, and maintaining overall oral hygiene[5][8]. The mechanism of action involves both direct antimicrobial effects (zinc) and enamel strengthening (fluoride). These combinations are typically available as over-the-counter oral care products.
