Overview

Sodium fluoride varnish is a highly concentrated form of fluoride that is professionally applied to tooth surfaces to prevent dental caries (cavities), remineralize tooth surfaces, and treat dentine hypersensitivity. It contains sodium fluoride as its active ingredient, typically at a concentration of 5% (22,600 ppm fluoride), though some products contain different concentrations. ## Description Sodium fluoride varnish is a dental treatment that works by creating a temporary, highly concentrated fluoride reservoir on the tooth surface. When applied, it hardens quickly upon contact with saliva, allowing the fluoride to remain in contact with tooth enamel for an extended period (one to seven days)[6][10]. This prolonged exposure enhances fluoride uptake during early stages of demineralization, making teeth more resistant to acid attacks and promoting remineralization of carious tooth substance[6]. The varnish is particularly effective because it deposits considerably more fluoride in demineralized tooth surfaces compared to sound tooth surfaces[10]. It's considered safe for use in children, with minimal risk of dental fluorosis even in children younger than 6 years of age[5][7]. ## Applications and Benefits Sodium fluoride varnish is used for: - Preventing dental caries development - Arresting early enamel and soft dentine caries - Treating tooth hypersensitivity - Sometimes as a provisional luting agent for cementing provisional crowns[6] The application process is quick and simple: - The varnish is painted directly onto dried tooth surfaces using a small brush - It sets rapidly when it comes in contact with saliva - No professional cleaning or rubber cup polishing is required before application - The procedure takes only a few minutes[7][10] This ease of application makes it particularly suitable for young children, individuals with developmental disabilities, and those with severe gag reflexes who might not tolerate other fluoride delivery methods like trays, gels, or foams[10]. ## Effectiveness Sodium fluoride varnish has strong evidence supporting its efficacy: - It's effective in preventing caries on permanent teeth - It prevents or reduces caries in primary teeth of young children - It may arrest early active enamel lesions in primary dentition - The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and American Dental Association (ADA) strongly recommend fluoride varnish due to consistent, high-quality evidence[10] ## Safety Profile Sodium fluoride varnish is considered safe with minimal side effects: - Only a small amount is used, with hardly any fluoride swallowed - The CDC indicates there is no published evidence that professionally applied fluoride varnish is a risk factor for dental fluorosis, even in children under 6 years of age[5] - Side effects are rare, though some patients may experience a temporarily unpleasant metallic taste or temporary staining of teeth depending on the brand used[7][8]
