Overview

Konfumin (sodium fumarate) is an antihypoxic, antioxidant, and volume-correcting infusion solution developed by the Russian Research Institute of Hematology and Transfusion Medicine and manufactured by Firm Medpolymer. It is formulated as a 15% hypertonic solution of sodium fumarate designed for intravenous administration. Sodium fumarate acts as an antihypoxant by participating in the Krebs cycle (tricarboxylic acid cycle), where it serves as a substrate for reversible oxidation-reduction reactions, thereby facilitating ATP synthesis and maintaining cellular energy supply under hypoxic conditions. Additionally, it helps neutralize acidic metabolic products to alleviate acidemia and reduces lipid peroxidation. Konfumin is approved in Russia for the treatment of hypoxic states of various etiologies associated with hypovolemia, such as blood loss, shock, trauma, burns, and intoxications.
