Sodium hematoporphyrin is a photosensitizing agent utilized in photodynamic therapy (PDT) for the treatment of malignancies, specifically advanced esophageal cancer. Developed by Qinglong High-Tech, the drug is administered intravenously and preferentially accumulates in neoplastic tissues. Upon exposure to specific wavelengths of laser light, the sodium hematoporphyrin molecules undergo excitation and transfer energy to molecular oxygen, generating highly reactive singlet oxygen and other reactive oxygen species (ROS). These ROS cause localized oxidative stress, leading to direct tumor cell death via necrosis and apoptosis, as well as damage to the tumor vasculature.
