Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Sodium hyaluronan butyrate (also known as sodium butyroyl hyaluronate) is an esterified derivative of hyaluronic acid and butyric acid. It is designed to combine the tissue-repairing, moisturizing, and barrier-forming properties of hyaluronic acid with the anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and mucosal-healing properties of butyrate. Developed by Sigea and marketed in products like Proctosal by Pontus Pharma, it is formulated as microenemas and topical creams. It is primarily used for the treatment of hemorrhoidal conditions, proctalgia, and the prevention of radiation proctitis in patients undergoing pelvic radiotherapy. By forming a protective mechanical barrier and promoting re-epithelialization, it helps normalize the rectal mucosa and reduce inflammation.
