Viscoat is a dispersive ophthalmic viscoelastic device (OVD) composed of a combination of 3% sodium hyaluronate and 4% chondroitin sulfate. It is primarily utilized during cataract surgery and other anterior segment procedures to protect the corneal endothelium from mechanical trauma and ultrasound energy (phacoemulsification). Unlike cohesive OVDs, Viscoat's dispersive properties allow it to adhere to and coat ocular tissues effectively, remaining in the eye during irrigation and aspiration phases of surgery. This provides continuous protection throughout the procedure, which is critical for maintaining corneal clarity and preventing endothelial cell loss. It was originally developed by Alcon.
