Sodium hypochlorite is an antiseptic and antimicrobial agent used primarily for cleaning wounds and preventing or treating skin and tissue infections such as those resulting from cuts, abrasions, pressure ulcers, diabetic foot ulcers, or surgical procedures[1][2][3][5]. It is commonly formulated as a dilute solution (Dakin solution) for medical use[8]. The mechanism of action involves the release of chlorine-based oxidants that disrupt bacterial cell metabolism by reacting with fatty acids and amino acids in tissues. This leads to the formation of chloramines that inhibit essential bacterial enzymes through irreversible oxidation processes[4]. Sodium hypochlorite acts as a strong oxidant and organic solvent at the site of application. It is not systemically absorbed when used topically.
