Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Hipoclorito de sódio 2,5% (Sodium hypochlorite 2.5%) is an aqueous disinfectant solution developed and manufactured by the Laboratório Farmacêutico do Estado de Pernambuco (LAFEPE) in Brazil. It is primarily distributed through the Unified Health System (SUS) as part of public health campaigns to prevent cholera and other acute diarrheal diseases. The solution is used for the domestic purification of water intended for human consumption, particularly in regions lacking adequate water treatment infrastructure. When added to water, sodium hypochlorite acts as a powerful oxidizing agent, releasing hypochlorous acid which penetrates microbial cell walls, denatures proteins, and inactivates nucleic acids, effectively neutralizing waterborne pathogens such as bacteria, viruses, and parasites.
