Overview

Sodium iodide (123I) is a diagnostic radiopharmaceutical developed by the Khlopin Radium Institute for the functional and anatomical assessment of the thyroid gland. It contains the radioisotope iodine-123, which emits gamma radiation suitable for scintigraphy and SPECT imaging. The iodide ion is actively sequestered from the bloodstream by thyroid follicular cells through the sodium-iodide symporter (NIS). This localization allows clinicians to measure iodine uptake rates and visualize thyroid topography to diagnose conditions such as thyrotoxicosis, nodular or diffuse goiters, and thyroid carcinomas. Its relatively short half-life of approximately 13.2 hours provides a favorable safety profile with lower radiation exposure compared to iodine-131, making it a preferred choice for diagnostic imaging and functional thyroid studies.
