Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Radioiodine 131I (sodium iodide 131I) is a therapeutic radiopharmaceutical used for the treatment of hyperthyroidism and differentiated thyroid carcinoma. It contains the radioactive isotope iodine-131, which is actively transported into thyroid follicular cells by the sodium-iodide symporter (NIS). Once inside the thyroid, the isotope emits beta particles that cause localized ionizing radiation damage, leading to DNA strand breaks and subsequent cell death (necrosis). This process effectively ablates overactive thyroid tissue in conditions like Graves' disease and toxic multinodular goiter, or destroys residual thyroid tissue and metastases in thyroid cancer patients. It has been in clinical use since the early 1940s and remains a cornerstone of thyroid therapy.
