Overview

Sodium iodide I-131 is a radiopharmaceutical used primarily for the treatment of hyperthyroidism, including Graves' disease, and thyroid carcinoma. It is an isotope of iodine that emits both beta and gamma radiation. The drug is typically orally administered and selectively concentrated in the thyroid gland via the sodium-iodide symporter (NIS). The therapeutic effect is achieved through the emission of beta particles, which travel short distances (0.6 to 2 mm) and cause localized tissue destruction and cell death by damaging DNA, thereby reducing the volume of functioning thyroid tissue. This specific clinical trial context from Mashhad University of Medical Sciences involves a prospective study comparing the efficacy of three different calculated doses (100, 150, and 200 μCi per gram of thyroid tissue) to determine the optimal activity required to achieve long-term euthyroidism in patients with Graves' disease.
