Overview

Sodium ipodate is an iodine-containing radiopaque contrast media primarily used for oral cholecystography to visualize the bile duct and gallbladder in X-ray imaging. The drug contains a tri-iodinated benzene ring with iodine at positions 2, 4, and 6, giving it high lipid solubility and radiopaque properties. Although not FDA approved for this indication, sodium ipodate has been used off-label to treat hyperthyroidism, including Graves' disease, thyroid storm, and subacute thyroiditis. Its mechanism in thyroid disorders involves inhibiting peripheral conversion of T4 to T3 and blocking thyroidal hormone release. The drug was developed by Bracco Diagnostics and approved in the United States on March 15, 1962, though it has since been discontinued by the FDA and Health Canada.
