Sodium l-ascorbyl-2-phosphate is a stable, water-soluble derivative of Vitamin C (l-ascorbic acid) that serves as a prodrug for dermatological applications. Unlike pure ascorbic acid, which is highly unstable and prone to oxidation in aqueous environments, this phosphate ester remains stable at neutral pH and resistant to atmospheric oxygen. Upon topical application, it is dephosphorylated by alkaline phosphatase and other cutaneous phosphatases to release active l-ascorbic acid. Its therapeutic utility in treating acne vulgaris is attributed to its potent antioxidant capacity, which prevents the oxidation of sebum components (particularly squalene) that are involved in comedogenesis, as well as its anti-inflammatory and mild antimicrobial effects against *Cutibacterium acnes*. Additionally, it is widely used in cosmeceuticals for skin lightening due to its ability to inhibit melanin synthesis via tyrosinase inhibition and for anti-aging effects by stimulating collagen production.
