Sodium metatungstate, commonly referred to in research as POM-1, is a polyoxometalate compound that functions as a potent and non-selective inhibitor of ecto-nucleoside triphosphate diphosphohydrolases (E-NTPDases). It specifically targets NTPDase1 (CD39), NTPDase2, and NTPDase3, thereby preventing the enzymatic hydrolysis of extracellular nucleotides such as adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and adenosine diphosphate (ADP). By maintaining higher levels of extracellular ADP, sodium metatungstate promotes purinergic signaling and platelet activation. In medical research, particularly concerning sickle cell disease (SCD), it is used as a pharmacological probe to study the role of CD39 in regulating vascular thrombosis and acute chest syndrome. It is primarily classified as a research-use-only reagent and is not currently evaluated in clinical trials as a therapeutic agent.
