Overview

Sodium monofluorophosphate (SMFP) is an inorganic compound and a fluoride anticaries agent primarily used in over-the-counter dental preparations such as toothpaste to prevent and treat dental cavities. It works by releasing fluoride ions through hydrolysis, which strengthens tooth enamel, inhibits bacterial growth, and reduces acid production that contributes to tooth decay. SMFP is water-soluble, odourless, and colourless. It was developed by a chemist at Procter & Gamble but patented for toothpaste use by Colgate-Palmolive. In addition to its primary use in oral care products for cavity prevention, it has also been used in some medications for osteoporosis[1][2][3][4][5][8].
