This fluoride-containing toothpaste, developed by Colgate-Palmolive, is a combination product designed for the prevention of dental cavities. It features a unique formulation of 1000 ppm sodium monofluorophosphate (MFP) and 1.5% arginine in a calcium carbonate base (PCC/RNCC). The fluoride component works by integrating into the tooth enamel to form fluorapatite, which is more resistant to acid-induced demineralization and promotes the remineralization of early carious lesions. The arginine component acts as a substrate for arginolytic bacteria within the oral biofilm; these bacteria metabolize arginine into ammonia, which raises the local pH and neutralizes the organic acids produced by sugar-fermenting bacteria. This dual mechanism addresses both the mineral balance of the tooth and the metabolic activity of the plaque biofilm to prevent cavity formation.
