Sodium morrhuate is a sclerosing agent composed of the sodium salts of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids derived from cod liver oil. It is used primarily for the treatment of small, uncomplicated varicose veins of the lower extremities. The drug acts by causing inflammation and subsequent damage to the intima (inner lining) of veins, leading to thrombus formation and eventual obliteration (closure) of the vein through fibrosis. Its mechanism involves direct cytotoxic effects on endothelial cells, red blood cells, and granulocytes at the site of injection, resulting in sclerosis rather than induction via plasma coagulation pathways. Sodium morrhuate has been used as a sclerosant since at least 1933[1][2][5][6][7][8].
