Sodium nitrate is an inorganic salt that acts as a precursor to nitric oxide (NO) through the nitrate-nitrite-NO pathway, an oxygen-independent route for NO generation. This mechanism is particularly relevant when the body's endogenous NO production is compromised. Research has explored its therapeutic potential in various conditions. In animal models of atherosclerosis, sodium nitrate supplementation has demonstrated beneficial effects, including improved plaque stability, reduced inflammation, and modulation of lipid profiles. It has also been investigated for its impact on exercise capacity in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). However, studies in a canine model of pulmonary hypertension did not support a therapeutic role for inhaled nitrate, and research in Duchenne muscular dystrophy mouse models indicated detrimental outcomes with nitrate supplementation.
