In animal models of atherosclerosis, sodium nitrate supplementation has demonstrated beneficial effects, including improved plaque stability, reduced inflammation, and modulation of lipid profiles. It has also been investigated for its impact on exercise capacity in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). However, studies in a canine model of pulmonary hypertension did not support a therapeutic role for inhaled nitrate, and research in Duchenne muscular dystrophy mouse models indicated detrimental outcomes with nitrate supplementation.
