Overview
Sodium nitroprusside is a potent and fast-acting intravenous vasodilator used primarily for the immediate reduction of blood pressure in hypertensive emergencies and acute heart failure. It is also employed to reduce bleeding during surgery by inducing controlled hypotension. Sodium nitroprusside acts as a prodrug that releases nitric oxide (NO) upon metabolism in the bloodstream. The released NO activates guanylate cyclase in vascular smooth muscle cells, increasing cyclic GMP levels and leading to relaxation of both arterioles and venules (with slightly greater effect on veins). This results in rapid peripheral vasodilation and decreased vascular resistance[1][2][3][4][5][6][8].
