Sodium orthovanadate is an inorganic salt and a potent, broad-spectrum inhibitor of protein tyrosine phosphatases (PTPs). By acting as a phosphate mimetic, it prevents the dephosphorylation of tyrosine residues on various proteins, thereby prolonging and intensifying intracellular signaling pathways. In the context of oncology research, it has been shown to inhibit the proliferation of cancer cells, including prostate cancer models like DU-145, by inducing apoptosis and necrosis and triggering cell cycle arrest at the G1/S checkpoint. Beyond its potential as an antineoplastic agent, sodium orthovanadate is recognized for its insulin-mimetic properties and is a standard laboratory reagent used in molecular biology to preserve the phosphorylation state of proteins in cell lysates.
