Sodium pentaborate pentahydrate is a white, crystalline inorganic compound composed of sodium and boron in a hydrated form. It is highly soluble in water and primarily used industrially as a lubricant and stabilizer in oilfield drilling fluids, as well as an additive for cement reinforcement to stabilize drilled well bore walls. In the biomedical context, it has demonstrated potential radioprotective, cryoprotective, antioxidant, apoptotic (pro-apoptotic), wound healing, anti-inflammatory, and antineoplastic activities. Its mechanism involves altering gene expression related to inflammation response, stress response, cellular growth/proliferation/apoptosis/tumorigenesis/oncolysis—specifically upregulating proapoptotic genes that may induce cell cycle arrest and decrease tumor cell proliferation. It can also induce oxidative stress leading to increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and enhanced apoptosis in susceptible tumor cells[2][6]. The exact mechanisms of action are not fully elucidated.
